"Chess Park" Session in Glendale, CA -- Rey, February 5, 2007

This Friday’s session was headed up by Childish. He brought his boom box and battles were planned and held. Though there weren’t many battles the chance to meet friends is always worth going. Especially since the krump sessions are not occurring every Friday night these days. It was rumored that a fight might break out but in the end nothing happened which was good because if a fight broke out then the cops and neighboring businesses would have reason to shut down the location for good. |

There is always a hazard of getting a curfew ticket from the cops. They
cost more than $300 and require a court appearance. This is a big pain
if the person doesn’t have money and has to resort to going to a mall or
a krump session for cheap entertainment—free.

Someone called the police for some reason because they came to end the session
that was in the final stages at 9:30pm, well before curfew time of 10:00pm. They
were alarmed because they don’t like the sight of, and don’t trust,
100 young adults having fun without problems or drama. It must be hard for people
to see this is a cultural event.

Throughout the event I took pictures of cute girls and some guys and videos
of buck dancers. It was fun and no problems with fights made it worthwhile.
Even though I was interested to see who was going to fight I was sad because
another krumper turned to violent means of solving problems. It is the
end of that krumper’s career. I hope his big homie has a word with
him since there was some hard talk online before the event.
This leads to the question whether krumpers can really control their lives
so they go up against the violence of gangs while keeping to krumping values? Time
will only tell at the Glendale session.
